HPL402 Battery Charging
The Hoyer HPL402 uses a rechargeable battery pack connected to the lift's electronic control box.
Joerns recommends keeping the battery fully charged to achieve the longest battery life. When the battery alarm sounds, the battery should be recharged.
Under normal conditions, approximately six hours of charging is required for a full charge. When fully charged, the LCD display should indicate 100%.
How to Charge the HPL402
- Move the lift to a safe location where it can remain stationary during charging.
- Make sure no patient is suspended in the lift.
- Plug the charger into a 110V wall outlet before connecting it to the lift's control box.
- Connect the charging plug to the control box.
- Allow approximately six hours for a full charge when needed.
- Confirm the LCD display indicates a full charge before returning the lift to service.
The HPL402 will not operate while the charger is connected.
Important Charging Safety
Never charge the HPL402 battery while a patient is in the lift.
Joerns specifically warns against charging the lift while it is being used in wet or bathing areas.
Do not open or modify the battery, control box, charger, or other electrical components. Unauthorized opening of the system may cause the equipment to malfunction.
Battery Storage & Extended Periods of Non-Use
When the HPL402 will not be used for an extended period, Joerns instructs users to press the emergency stop button in. This helps prevent the LCD display from slowly draining the battery.
Joerns states that a control box with an installed battery can hold an unused charge for approximately six months.
Even when the lift is used infrequently, the battery condition should be checked before returning the HPL402 to patient service.
HPL402 Duty Cycle
The HPL402 control box has a duty-cycle limit that must be observed to prevent overheating and damage.
Unless a different duty cycle is stated on the control-box label, Joerns specifies a maximum duty cycle of approximately 10%, or six minutes of continuous operation per hour.
If the lift has been operated heavily, allow the system adequate time to cool before additional powered lifting.
Before-Use HPL402 Inspection
Joerns' maintenance checklist includes several items that should be inspected before use.
- Confirm that the base is level and all four wheels are in contact with the floor.
- Check that wheel bolts are tight.
- Make sure the wheels swivel and roll freely.
- Confirm that the adjustable base locks securely.
- Make sure the base opens and closes smoothly.
- Confirm that the mast is fully engaged and securely locked into the mast sleeve.
- Check that the boom is centered between the base legs.
- Inspect the sling and attachment points before each transfer.
Base & Wheel Maintenance
The HPL402's base and casters should remain free-moving and mechanically secure.
Joerns recommends checking wheel bolts, caster movement, the base adjustment system, and the base locking mechanism as part of regular maintenance.
Debris such as hair, thread, or other material can interfere with caster movement and should be removed when found.
Mast & Boom Inspection
Inspect the mast for bends or deflection and make sure it remains fully engaged and locked into the base.
Joerns also recommends inspecting mast and boom bolts and nuts for wear and tightness and confirming that the boom remains properly centered between the base legs.
Cradle & Sling Attachment Inspection
Inspect the cradle hanger post and sling attachment points regularly for wear, damage, or deflection.
Joerns specifies that the cradle hanger post should be replaced if wear exceeds 1/16 inch.
Before every transfer, inspect the sling and web straps for cuts, tears, fraying, damaged stitching, or other signs of wear. Do not use a damaged sling.
HPL402 Lubrication
Joerns recommends periodic lubrication of pivot joints and moving hardware as part of the maintenance schedule.
Maintenance points include:
- The top of the mast where the boom attaches
- The top and bottom actuator mounting points
- Base adjustment hardware
- Rotating hardware
- Wheel and swivel bearings
Joerns specifies light oil for pivot joints and light grease for the base adjustment lock plate and rotating hardware.
Cleaning the HPL402
Clean the lift using mild soap and dry it thoroughly afterward.
Joerns specifically instructs users not to wash the HPL402 under water pressure.
Painted surfaces should be kept clean of oil. Joerns also includes the periodic application of automotive or appliance wax in its maintenance checklist.
Mechanical Emergency Lowering
The HPL402 includes a mechanical downward-release system that allows the boom to be lowered if powered lowering is unavailable.
Caregivers and facility staff should know where the emergency lowering mechanism is located and understand its operation before the lift is placed into service.
HPL402 Brake Reminder
The HPL402's caster brakes are intended for parking.
Joerns instructs users not to lock the brakes or block the wheels while lifting a patient. The base should instead be widened as appropriate for stability and the wheels allowed to move naturally during lifting.
Who Should Service the HPL402?
Joerns states that only qualified persons should service or repair Hoyer lifts.
Routine user inspection and cleaning are important, but structural repairs, electrical repairs, actuator replacement, control-box service, and other technical repairs should be performed by qualified service personnel or an authorized Hoyer service resource.
When to Stop Using the Lift
Remove the HPL402 from service and arrange inspection if you notice conditions such as:
- Unusual noises during lifting or lowering
- Intermittent or unresponsive hand-control operation
- Visible damage to the mast, boom, cradle, base, or casters
- Loose or damaged hardware
- Difficulty opening or closing the base
- Wheels that do not roll or swivel freely
- A sling or sling attachment showing wear or damage
- An electrical, charging, or actuator problem
Do not continue using the lift until the condition has been evaluated and corrected by an appropriate service resource.
