HPL700 Battery System
The Hoyer HPL700 is supplied with two detachable rechargeable battery packs and an off-board desktop charger.
The lift uses one battery pack at a time. The second pack can be kept charged and ready so caregivers can exchange batteries when needed and reduce downtime.
Joerns recommends keeping the batteries fully charged whenever possible.
How Long Does the HPL700 Battery Take to Charge?
Joerns states that a full charge takes approximately four hours.
Charging is automatic:
- Green light – mains power is on
- Yellow light – the battery is charging
- Yellow light off – the battery is fully charged
Joerns recommends charging the battery immediately when the lift is first received.
How to Charge the HPL700
- Remove the battery pack from the lift by releasing the latch at the top of the pack.
- Fit the battery pack securely onto the off-board charging unit.
- Plug the charger into an appropriate electrical outlet and switch the power on.
- Allow the automatic charging cycle to complete.
- When the yellow charging light turns off, disconnect the charger from power.
- Remove the battery pack from the charger.
- Reinstall the battery on the HPL700 and make sure the retaining latch clicks securely into place.
Can You Leave the Battery Charging Overnight?
Yes. Joerns recommends keeping the batteries fully charged and states that a battery may be placed on charge whenever it is not in use.
If convenient, the battery can be charged every night. The charger is designed to prevent overcharging even when the battery remains connected for an extended period.
Do Not Run the Battery Completely Flat
Joerns specifically instructs users never to run HPL700 batteries completely flat.
If the audible low-battery warning sounds during a transfer, complete the lifting operation already in progress and place the battery on charge.
Joerns also recommends charging the battery as soon as the display shows the half-empty battery symbol to help avoid permanent battery damage.
Battery Storage
Do not store the HPL700 battery for long periods without regular charging.
Joerns also instructs users not to leave the battery pack connected to the charger when the charger itself is unplugged.
Before returning a stored lift to service, confirm that the battery is adequately charged and complete the normal pre-use inspection.
Important Charging Safety
- Do not open the battery, charger, hand control, or control box.
- Do not touch the battery or charger terminals.
- Do not disconnect the charger by pulling on the cable.
- Keep the charging cable positioned so it does not create a trip hazard.
- Do not leave the charger powered with no battery connected.
- Do not charge HPL700 batteries in a bathroom or shower room.
Powered Base
The HPL700 comes with a power-operated base.
The caregiver can open and close the lift legs using the hand control rather than manually spreading the base.
This is especially useful during higher-capacity transfers where reducing caregiver bending and forceful leg adjustment is important.
Powered Base Inspection
Before use, confirm that the base opens and closes correctly using the hand control.
Joerns recommends checking that the legs travel through their full inward and outward range.

Hoyer Smart Monitor
Current HPL700 models use Hoyer Smart Monitor technology to track lift usage and service information.

Three-Step Battery Indicator
The HPL700 Smart Monitor includes a three-step battery indicator.
When the display reaches the half-empty battery symbol, Joerns recommends placing the battery on charge as soon as possible.
Do not intentionally continue using the lift until the battery is completely discharged.
Overload Protection
The Smart Monitor records attempted lifts above the safe working load.
If an overload condition occurs, lower the boom, remove the excess load, and complete the normal safety checks before returning the lift to service.
The HPL700 has a safe working load of 700 lb. Never intentionally use overload protection as a method of testing patient weight.
Emergency Stop & Redundant Controls
The HPL700 control box includes an emergency stop button and redundant raise/lower controls.

Daily / Before-Use HPL700 Checklist

- Confirm the spreader bar rotates and swings freely.
- Make sure the spreader bar is firmly attached to the boom.
- Confirm the mast is fully engaged and securely locked.
- Inspect sling hooks and side suspenders for excessive wear.
- Make sure the powered legs open and close correctly.
- Operate the hand control and confirm the boom raises and lowers properly.
- Confirm there is no low-battery warning.
- Test the emergency stop button.

Spreader Bar Inspection
The HPL700 uses a 6-point bariatric loop spreader bar for compatible Hoyer loop-style bariatric slings.
Inspect the spreader bar for:
- Freedom of rotation and swing
- Wear at the central pivot
- Secure attachment to the boom
- Damage or excessive wear at sling attachment points
Do not use the lift if the spreader bar or its attachment hardware appears damaged or insecure.

Never exceed the safe working load of the lift, sling, spreader bar, optional scale, or any other component in the transfer system.
The usable capacity of the complete transfer system is always limited by its lowest-rated component.
