How to Use the Hoyer Calibre 850 Safely – Bariatric Transfer Guide

The Hoyer Calibre is a heavy-duty bariatric patient lift designed for lifting and transferring patients up to 850 lb. Joerns specifies that the Calibre is intended for indoor use and must be operated by a minimum of two caregivers.

Preparation Checklist

• Ensure the battery is adequately charged before use.
• Clear a wide transfer path and allow sufficient room for the Calibre’s large powered base.
• Confirm that at least two caregivers are available to operate the lift.
• Select a properly sized bariatric sling that is compatible with the Calibre and appropriate for the patient.
• Inspect the sling for wear, fraying, or damage before use.
• Check that the lift is in proper working condition and that all wheels are in contact with the floor on a level surface.
• Explain the transfer process to the patient before beginning.

Standard Transfer Sequence

1. Use the powered leg adjustment to position the base around the chair, bed, or wheelchair as needed for the transfer.
2. Keep the casters free and the brakes released while lifting.
3. Apply the appropriate bariatric sling according to the sling instructions.
4. Attach the sling securely to the 6-point cradle.
5. Confirm that all sling attachment points are secure before lifting.
6. Raise the patient smoothly using the hand control.
7. Use the integrated scale when weighing is required, following the scale instructions supplied with the lift.
8. Move the lift carefully using the wide wrap-around push handle and with both caregivers coordinating the transfer.

Calibre Caster & Brake Safety
