Before You Begin – Preparation Checklist
- Ensure the battery is adequately charged before use.
- Clear the transfer path of rugs, cords, clutter, and other obstacles.
- Inspect the lift and sling before beginning the transfer.
- Select a loop-style sling that is compatible with the Advance and appropriate for the patient and transfer.
- Confirm that the sling is the correct size and that its safe working load is appropriate for the patient.
- Plan the transfer before beginning and explain the process to the patient.
Standard Transfer Sequence
- Position the Advance around the chair, bed, wheelchair, commode, or other transfer surface as appropriate.
- Keep the casters free and the brakes released while lifting.
- Apply the appropriate sling according to the sling instructions.
- Attach the sling loops securely to the 6-point spreader bar using the appropriate attachment points.
- Confirm that all sling attachment points are secure before lifting.
- Raise the patient smoothly using the hand control.
- Move the lift carefully using the designated push handle.
- Lower the patient in a controlled manner onto the destination surface.
- Once the patient is safely supported, detach and remove the sling as appropriate.
Advance Caster & Brake Safety
During patient lifting, the Advance casters should remain free and unbraked. This allows the lift to move toward its center of gravity during the lifting process rather than causing the patient to swing toward the center of gravity.
Always follow the current Hoyer Advance user manual for the specific transfer being performed.
Floor Recovery Transfers
The Hoyer Advance is designed to accommodate transfers from the floor. Its lifting range and compact design allow it to approach a patient at floor level while still providing the clearance needed for many home and professional-care environments.
For a floor transfer, use a Hoyer loop-style sling that is compatible with the Advance and appropriate for the patient’s size, support requirements, and transfer needs. Follow the current Advance user manual and the instructions supplied with the sling.
Advance Sling Attachment System
The Hoyer Advance uses a 6-point spreader bar designed for Hoyer loop-style slings. The standard Joerns 0Y0037 spreader bar is specifically designed for the Advance and uses loop or webbing-style sling attachments.
Clip-style slings should not be attached to the standard Advance 6-point spreader bar.

Sling selection depends on the patient’s measurements, mobility, positioning and support needs, and the type of transfer being performed. Always confirm sling compatibility, size, attachment method, condition, and safe working load before use.
The Hoyer Access Padded Sling is a specialized toileting sling intended for seated transfers and is not a general-purpose sling. Patient suitability should be assessed before using an access-style sling.

Bathroom & Commode Transfers
The Advance’s compact design and tapered legs can help when positioning the lift around larger chairs, commodes, and wheelchairs. For toileting transfers, a compatible Access-style loop sling may be appropriate for patients who meet the requirements for that type of sling.
Because Access slings provide less body support than general full-body sling designs, they are not appropriate for every patient. Always confirm patient suitability and follow the sling instructions.
Folding & Storage
One of the distinguishing features of the Hoyer Advance is its lightweight aluminum construction and no-tools folding design. The lift can be folded for more compact storage without requiring tools.
Advance 6-Point Spreader Bar
The genuine Joerns Hoyer 0Y0037 6-Point Spreader Bar Assembly is the standard loop-style spreader bar used with the Hoyer Advance electric and hydraulic models.
An Advance-specific 6-Point Spreader Bar with Integrated Scale is also available for applications where patient weighing capability is required.
