How to Use the Hoyer Advance-E 340: Safe Transfer Guide for Caregivers

Using a patient lift for the first time can feel intimidating. The good news is that the Hoyer Advance-E 340 is designed to make transfers smoother and safer for both the patient and the caregiver once you learn the proper sequence.

Before You Begin – Preparation Checklist

  1. Fully charge the battery.

  2. Clear the path of rugs, cords, and clutter.

  3. Choose the correct sling for the transfer (see our companion guide on compatible slings).

  4. Explain every step to the person being lifted so they know what to expect.

  5. Have a second person available for the first few transfers if possible.

Step-by-Step Transfer Process

  1. Position the lift – Roll the Advance-E so the open base surrounds the chair, bed, or wheelchair.

  2. Lock the rear casters.

  3. Apply the sling – Follow the sling’s instructions for proper placement and connection points.

  4. Attach the sling loops to the spreader bar.

  5. Raise the patient slowly using the hand control. Keep one hand on the spreader bar or boom for guidance.

  6. Move the lift carefully to the destination surface.

  7. Lower the patient slowly and remove the sling once they are safely positioned.

  8. Unlock the brakes and move the lift out of the way.

Floor Recovery Transfers

The Advance-E can lift a person from the floor. This is one of its most valuable features for home caregivers. Position the base carefully, use a full-body or hammock-style sling, and take your time.

Recommended sling for floor recoveries and longer sits: Hoyer Full Body Hammock Loop Style Sling.

Bathroom and Commode Transfers

Bathroom transfers require extra planning because of limited space. The compact folded size and swan-neck legs of the Advance-E help in tighter areas. For toileting, many caregivers prefer an access-style sling such as the Hoyer Access Padded Sling.

Common First-Time Mistakes

  • Forgetting to lock the brakes

  • Using the wrong sling size or style

  • Raising or lowering too quickly

  • Not clearing the path completely
