Proper battery charging and routine maintenance help keep the Hoyer Advance-E 340 ready for regular use. Joerns provides specific charging, inspection, cleaning, and maintenance instructions for the Advance that should be followed instead of relying on generic patient-lift battery advice.
Hoyer Advance-E Battery System
The electric Hoyer Advance uses a rechargeable battery pack to power the lift actuator and control system.
The batteries are housed inside the removable power pack and are charged through the charging socket located at the base of the control box.
Joerns recommends keeping the batteries fully charged whenever possible.
How Long Does the Hoyer Advance Take to Charge?
According to the Joerns Advance user manual, charging can take up to approximately 4 hours.
Charging is automatic. The control system uses indicator lights to show charging status:
- Green light – mains power is on
- Yellow light – the battery is charging
- Yellow light off – charging is complete
Joerns recommends charging the battery immediately when the lift is first received.
How to Charge the Hoyer Advance-E
- Position the lift in a safe location near an appropriate electrical outlet.
- Insert the charger plug straight into the charging point at the base of the control box.
- Do not twist the plug while inserting it.
- Connect the charger power cord to the appropriate electrical outlet.
- Allow the automatic charging process to complete.
- Before returning the lift to service, disconnect the charger from the lift and mains power.
Can You Leave the Advance Battery Charging Overnight?
Yes. Joerns specifically recommends keeping the batteries fully charged and states that the battery can be placed on charge whenever the lift is not in use.
Joerns also says the battery may be charged every night if that is more convenient.
The charging system is designed to prevent the batteries from overcharging when the charger remains connected for an extended period.
Do Not Completely Discharge the Battery
Joerns specifically instructs users not to run the Advance batteries completely flat.
When the audible low-battery warning sounds, complete the lifting operation already in progress and place the battery on charge.
Joerns also recommends charging as soon as the display shows the half-empty battery symbol to help prevent possible permanent battery damage.
Can You Use the Hoyer Advance While It Is Charging?
No. Do not use the Hoyer Advance while charging is taking place.
Before moving the lift, make sure the charging connection has been disconnected. Moving the lift while it remains connected to the charger could damage the electrical connection.
Important Charging Safety
- Do not open the battery, charger, hand control, or control box.
- Do not touch battery or charger terminals.
- Do not use the lift while it is charging.
- Do not disconnect the charger by pulling on the cable.
- Keep the charging cable positioned so it does not create a trip hazard.
- Do not charge an electric Hoyer Advance in a bathroom or shower room.
Battery Storage
Do not store the Advance battery for long periods without charging it regularly throughout the storage period.
If the lift is used only occasionally, continue checking and charging the battery so it does not remain discharged during storage.
Before returning a stored lift to service, inspect the lift and confirm that the battery is adequately charged.
Battery Connections
The Advance battery normally requires little maintenance beyond proper charging.
Joerns recommends checking that the battery connections remain clean.
If the battery, charging connection, cable, control box, or power pack appears damaged, do not attempt to open or repair the electrical component yourself.
Daily Hoyer Advance-E Inspection
Joerns recommends inspecting the lift daily and before use.
- Make sure the lift moves freely on its casters.
- Confirm the spreader bar rotates and swings freely.
- Make sure the spreader bar is securely attached to the boom.
- Inspect the sling attachment hooks for excessive wear.
- Confirm the mast is fully engaged and securely locked.
- Make sure the legs open and close correctly.
- Check that the hand control operates correctly.
- Confirm the emergency stop functions properly.
- Check that the battery has adequate charge.
- Inspect the sling for wear, fraying, cuts, tears, or other damage.
- Check fasteners and visible hardware for looseness or excessive wear.
Inspect the Spreader Bar
The Advance uses a 6-point spreader bar for compatible Hoyer loop-style slings.
Before use, make sure the spreader bar rotates and swings freely and remains securely connected to the boom.
Inspect sling attachment points for excessive wear or damage.
A damaged or insecure spreader bar should be evaluated before the lift is returned to service.
Inspect the Sling Before Every Transfer
Joerns recommends inspecting the sling regularly and before use.
Look for fraying, cuts, tears, damaged stitching, worn attachment loops, or other deterioration.
Do not use a sling that is worn or damaged.

Caster & Base Inspection
Check that all casters remain securely attached to the legs and rotate freely.
Hair, thread, debris, or other material around the caster can interfere with movement and should be removed.
Also confirm that the base remains even and level with all four casters contacting the floor.
Check the Adjustable Legs
The Advance's base legs should operate correctly through their full inward and outward range.
Do not continue using the lift if the leg adjustment mechanism is damaged, unusually difficult to operate, or does not securely maintain the intended position.
Advance Caster & Brake Reminder
The rear caster brakes are primarily used for parking and storage.
During ordinary patient lifting, Joerns instructs that the casters should remain free and unbraked so the lift can naturally move toward its center of gravity.

Cleaning the Hoyer Advance
Joerns recommends cleaning the Advance with ordinary soap and water and/or an appropriate hard-surface disinfectant.
Avoid harsh chemical cleaners and abrasive products because they can damage the lift's surface finish.
Avoid wetting electrical components during cleaning.
Lubrication
Joerns includes lubrication of appropriate pivot joints in its maintenance schedule.
Maintenance points can include:
- Mast and boom connections
- Pedal assembly

Lubrication should be performed according to the current Joerns maintenance instructions rather than applying lubricant indiscriminately to the lift.
341 lb Safe Working Load
The Hoyer Advance has a safe working load of 341 lb (155 kg).
Routine maintenance does not change the rated capacity of the lift.
Never exceed the safe working load of the Advance, sling, spreader bar, scale, or any other component in the transfer system.
When Should the Advance Be Professionally Serviced?
Daily caregiver checks do not replace periodic inspection and servicing.
Structural repairs, actuator service, control-box repair, electrical work, load testing, and other technical service should be performed by appropriately qualified personnel using the applicable Joerns procedures and replacement parts.
When to Stop Using the Advance-E
Remove the lift from service and arrange inspection if you notice:
- A battery that will not maintain adequate charge
- Repeated low-battery warnings after appropriate charging
- A damaged charger, cable, battery pack, or electrical connector
- Intermittent or unresponsive hand-control operation
- Unusual actuator noise or movement
- A damaged or insecure spreader bar
- Loose or damaged hardware
- Casters that do not move freely
- Problems opening or closing the base legs
- Visible damage to the mast, boom, base, or frame
- A worn or damaged sling
