How to Use the Hoyer HPL450 Electric Lift Safely

The Hoyer HPL450 is a full-body electric patient lift. Following the manufacturer’s operating instructions helps support smooth, controlled transfers.

Preparation Checklist

  • Ensure a charged battery pack is installed.
  • Clear the transfer path.
  • Select and apply an appropriate Hoyer sling that is compatible with the lift and suitable for the patient.
  • Position the base around the chair, bed, or wheelchair as appropriate for the transfer.
  • Keep the casters free and the brakes unlocked while lifting the patient.
  • Explain the transfer process to the patient before beginning.

Standard Transfer Sequence

  1. Position the lift around the patient with the base adjusted as needed for access and stability.
  2. Keep the caster brakes released while lifting.
  3. Fit the appropriate sling according to the sling instructions.
  4. Attach the sling securely to the 6-point spreader bar using the correct attachment points.
  5. Raise the patient smoothly using the hand control.
  6. Move the lift carefully using the integrated push handle.
  7. Lower the patient in a controlled manner onto the destination surface.
  8. Once the patient is safely supported, detach and remove the sling as appropriate.

HPL450 Caster & Brake Safety

The Hoyer HPL450 has two braked casters that may be used for parking. During patient lifting, Joerns instructs that the casters should remain free and unbraked so the lift can move naturally toward its center of gravity. Always follow the current Hoyer HPL450/HML450 user manual for the specific transfer being performed.

Floor Recovery

The HPL450 can accommodate transfers from the floor when used according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Always follow the current Joerns HPL450/HML450 user manual and the instructions supplied with the sling before performing a floor transfer.
