How to Use the Hoyer Presence Pro 500 Safely – Step-by-Step Guide

The Hoyer Presence Pro 500 is a professional full-body patient lift with a 500 lb safe working load, powered base, and a wide lifting range for transfers from the floor through higher surfaces. It can be configured with either a 6-point loop-style spreader bar or a 4-point Securi3 positioning cradle.

Preparation Checklist

  • Ensure the battery is adequately charged before use.
  • Clear the transfer path and make sure there is sufficient room to maneuver the lift.
  • Confirm which sling attachment system is installed on the Presence before selecting a sling.
  • Select a sling that is compatible with the installed spreader bar or positioning cradle and appropriate for the patient.
  • Inspect the sling for wear, fraying, or damage before use.
  • Check that the lift is in proper working condition and that all four wheels are on a level surface.
  • Explain the transfer process to the patient before beginning.

Standard Transfer Sequence

  1. Position the Presence around the patient and adjust the powered base as needed for access and stability.
  2. Apply the appropriate sling according to the sling instructions.
  3. Attach the sling securely to the installed spreader bar or positioning cradle.
  4. Confirm that all sling attachment points are secure before lifting.
  5. Raise the patient smoothly using the hand control.
  6. Move the lift carefully using the designated handle. The Presence also includes a foot push pad to assist with initiating movement.
  7. Move a loaded lift only at a slow walking pace and avoid uneven surfaces or floor obstructions.
  8. Lower the patient in a controlled manner onto the destination surface.
  9. Once the patient is safely supported, detach and remove the sling as appropriate.

Presence Caster & Wheel Safety

Wheel use depends on the type of transfer being performed. When lifting a patient from the floor, Joerns specifically instructs caregivers to lock the wheels. For other transfers, follow the current Hoyer Presence user manual and the instructions for the specific transfer being performed.

Floor Recovery

The Hoyer Presence is designed to lift patients from the floor and accommodate transfers to higher surfaces. Its spreader bar has a minimum height of approximately 16.9 inches, helping provide the lifting range needed for floor recovery.

When performing a floor lift, lock the wheels as instructed in the Joerns Presence user manual and use a sling that is appropriate for the patient and compatible with the installed sling attachment system.

Presence Sling Attachment Systems

The Hoyer Presence can use two different sling attachment systems. The sling must match the attachment system installed on the lift.

  • 6-point spreader bar: Uses Hoyer loop-style slings with webbing loops.
  • 4-point positioning cradle: Uses Hoyer Comfort slings with the Securi3 safety clip system.

Always confirm which attachment system is installed on your Presence before ordering a sling.

Compatible Hoyer Sling Options

Compatible sling options available from MyHoyerLift include:

Sling selection depends on the patient’s size, mobility, positioning needs, transfer type, and clinical assessment. Always confirm sling attachment compatibility, size, and safe working load before use.

Not sure which sling fits your Presence? Use our Hoyer Sling Compatibility Chart to compare loop-style and Securi3 clip-style sling systems.

Bathroom & Toileting Transfers

Toileting sling selection depends on the attachment system installed on the Presence. A Presence equipped with a 6-point spreader bar can use compatible loop-style Access slings, while a Presence equipped with a 4-point positioning cradle uses compatible Hoyer Comfort Securi3 clip-style slings.

Access-style toileting slings are specialized products and are not appropriate for every patient. Patient mobility, trunk control, positioning needs, sling size, and transfer requirements should be assessed before use.
