The Hoyer Presence Pro 500 combines a rechargeable battery system with Hoyer Smart Monitor technology to support regular use, service tracking, and preventive maintenance. Proper charging, daily inspection, and scheduled servicing help keep the lift reliable and ready for patient transfers.
Hoyer Presence Battery System
The Presence uses a removable 24V rechargeable sealed lead-acid battery pack with a 3.2 Ah capacity.
The battery pack is removed from the lift and placed on the off-board charging unit for charging.
Joerns recommends keeping the battery fully charged whenever possible.
How Long Does the Presence Battery Take to Charge?
Joerns states that a full charge takes approximately four hours.
Charging is automatic:
- Green light – mains power is on
- Yellow light – battery is charging
- Yellow light off – battery is fully charged
Joerns recommends charging the battery immediately when the lift is first received.
How to Charge the Hoyer Presence
- Remove the power pack from the lift by releasing the retaining latch.
- Fit the power pack securely onto the off-board charging unit.
- Plug the charger into an appropriate electrical outlet.
- Allow the battery to charge automatically until the yellow charging light turns off.
- Disconnect the charger from power.
- Remove the battery pack from the charger.
- Reinstall the battery on the Presence and make sure it clicks securely into place.
Can You Leave the Presence Battery Charging Overnight?
Yes. Joerns recommends keeping the battery fully charged and states that the battery may be placed on charge whenever it is not in use.
If convenient, the battery can be charged every night. The charger is designed to prevent overcharging even when the battery remains connected for an extended period.
Do Not Run the Battery Completely Flat
Joerns specifically instructs users never to run the Presence battery completely flat.
When the Smart Monitor displays a half-empty battery symbol, the battery should be placed on charge as soon as possible to help avoid permanent battery damage.
If the low-voltage audible alarm sounds during operation, complete the lifting operation already in progress and place the battery on charge.
Battery Storage
Do not store the Presence battery for long periods without regular charging.
Joerns also instructs users not to leave the battery pack connected to the charger while the charger itself is unplugged.
Before returning a stored lift to service, confirm that the battery is adequately charged and perform the normal pre-use inspection.
Important Charging Safety
- Do not open the battery, charger, hand control, or control box.
- Do not touch the battery or charger terminals.
- Do not disconnect the charger by pulling on the cable.
- Position the charging cable so it does not create a trip hazard.
- Do not leave the charger powered with no battery connected.
- Do not charge the Presence battery in a bathroom or shower room.
What Is the Hoyer Smart Monitor?
The Hoyer Smart Monitor is the Presence control system that stores operational and service information about the lift.
The Smart Monitor can record and display:
- Total patient lift cycles
- Total actuator work
- Number of overload events
- Number of days since the last service interval
- Battery status
- Service reminders
This information is displayed through the Smart Monitor LCD screen and can help caregivers, facilities, and service technicians understand lift usage and maintenance requirements.
Smart Monitor Battery Indicator
The Presence Smart Monitor uses a three-step battery display.
- Full battery symbol – battery is fully charged and ready for use.
- Half-empty battery symbol – battery should be charged soon.
- Empty battery symbol – the battery has no remaining usable capacity and should be charged immediately.
Joerns warns that the battery should be placed on charge as soon as the half-empty symbol appears to help avoid possible permanent battery damage.
Smart Monitor Service Reminder
When the Presence reaches its service interval, the Smart Monitor displays a service symbol.
The monitor also produces an audible reminder when the handset is used, indicating that a preventive-maintenance check is recommended.
Service reminders should not be ignored. Arrange the appropriate inspection and servicing before continuing long-term use.
Smart Monitor Overload Protection
If an attempt is made to lift more than the Presence safe working load, the Smart Monitor records an overload and stops lift operation.
Joerns instructs users to lower the boom and remove the excess weight.
If an overload has been recorded, Joerns recommends completing all routine daily checks before further use and contacting an authorized Hoyer service provider for additional guidance.
On-Board Emergency Controls
The Presence Smart Monitor includes redundant on-board controls that can raise or lower the lift if the handset is unavailable.
Because the Presence uses powered leg adjustment, the Smart Monitor also includes redundant controls for opening and closing the legs.
Caregivers should know the location and operation of the emergency controls before the lift is placed into regular service.
Daily / Before-Use Presence Checklist
Joerns strongly recommends completing the following checks daily and before using the lift:
- Make sure the lift moves freely on its casters.
- Confirm the spreader bar or cradle rotates and moves correctly.
- Make sure the spreader bar or cradle is securely attached to the boom.
- Inspect sling hooks and attachment points for excessive wear.
- Confirm the mast is fully engaged and securely locked into the base.
- Make sure the powered legs open and close correctly.
- Operate the handset and confirm the boom raises and lowers correctly.
- Confirm that no low-battery warning is present.
- Test the emergency stop button.
- Inspect the sling for fraying, tears, cuts, worn stitching, or other damage.
Powered Base Inspection
The Presence uses electric leg adjustment.
Test the legs through their normal opening and closing range and make sure they respond correctly to the handset.
Listen for unusual noises from the leg actuator and inspect the actuator and visible connections for damage.
Do not force the base against furniture, walls, or other obstacles.
Presence Caster & Brake Reminder
The Presence has two braked rear casters that may be used for parking.
During ordinary patient lifting, Joerns instructs that the casters should remain free and unbraked so the lift can move toward its natural center of gravity.
Always follow the current Presence manual for the specific transfer being performed.
Mast & Boom Inspection
Check that the mast locking device operates correctly and that the mast is fully engaged in the base.
Inspect the boom and mast connections for looseness, wear, or visible damage.
Joerns states that the actuator itself generally requires no routine maintenance beyond checking correct operation and listening for unusual noise.
Spreader Bar / Cradle Inspection
The Presence may be configured with either a 6-point loop-style spreader bar or a 4-point Securi3 positioning cradle.
Inspect the installed attachment system for wear, loose hardware, damaged hooks, worn clips, or other conditions that could affect secure sling attachment.
Do not use the lift if the spreader bar, cradle, or sling attachment points appear damaged or excessively worn.
Inspect the Sling Before Every Transfer
Inspect the sling before each use for:
- Fraying
- Tears or cuts
- Damaged stitching
- Worn loops
- Damaged Securi3 clips when applicable
- Other signs of deterioration
Do not use a damaged sling.

Battery & Control Box Inspection
The Presence battery normally requires little maintenance beyond proper charging.
Joerns recommends checking that battery connections remain clean.
Also inspect the Smart Monitor/control-box connections and handset cable for visible damage or loose connections.
Electrical repairs should be handled by qualified service personnel rather than opening the battery or control components.
Cleaning the Presence
Keep the lift frame, boom, mast, base, push handle, spreader bar or cradle, and exterior surfaces clean.
Use cleaning methods appropriate for medical equipment and follow Joerns cleaning guidance.
Avoid allowing excessive moisture into the battery, Smart Monitor, handset, actuator connections, or other electrical components.
500 lb Safe Working Load
The Hoyer Presence has a safe working load of 500 lb (227 kg).
The Smart Monitor's overload protection does not replace proper capacity planning.
Never intentionally attempt to lift beyond the safe working load of the Presence, sling, spreader bar, cradle, scale, or any other component in the transfer system.
Yearly Service & Preventive Maintenance
Joerns recommends daily checks plus a yearly service, inspection, and test to help keep the Presence in safe working condition.
Formal service should include inspection of the lift structure, actuators, battery system, Smart Monitor, casters, mast, boom, powered base, and sling attachment system.
Service and technical repairs should be performed by qualified personnel or an authorized Hoyer service resource.
When to Stop Using the Presence
Remove the Presence from service and arrange inspection if you notice:
- A battery that will not maintain adequate charge
- Repeated low-battery warnings after proper charging
- A Smart Monitor overload warning
- A persistent service warning
- Intermittent or unresponsive handset operation
- Unusual actuator noise
- Powered legs that do not open or close correctly
- A damaged or insecure spreader bar or cradle
- Loose or damaged mast, boom, or base components
- Casters that do not roll or swivel freely
- A damaged sling or sling attachment
