Hoyer Sling Size & Compatibility FAQs
How do I choose the right sling for a patient?
Choosing the correct sling starts with a proper patient assessment. Key factors include the patient’s mobility and ability to participate, the type of transfer (bed to chair, toileting, bathing, or floor recovery), weight and body shape, and any special needs such as amputation or limited flexibility.
Match the sling style to the task. Toileting usually needs a sling with an aperture. Everyday transfers often use a Full Back or Quickfit. Joerns recommends a full risk assessment before every transfer.
What is the difference between loop-style and clip-style slings?
Hoyer uses two attachment systems that are not interchangeable.
Loop-style slings attach to a 6-point spreader bar with color-coded webbing loops. These are the most common and work with most Hoyer floor lifts, including Advance-E 340, HPL450, HPL700, HML400, HPL402, and Calibre.
Clip-style (Comfort) slings use the Securi3 clip system and attach to a 4-point positioning cradle. These are for Presence and Stature when that cradle is fitted.
Using the wrong attachment style is unsafe. Always confirm which system your lift uses before ordering.
How do I select the correct sling size?
Hoyer uses a color-coded binding on the sling. Weight ranges are guidelines only — body shape and height also affect fit.
Extra Small / Brown — up to about 100 lb
Small / Red — about 75–150 lb
Medium / Yellow — about 125–200 lb
Large / Green — about 175–350 lb
Extra Large / Blue — about 275–500 lb
Bariatric slings use a striped color system and are typically rated to 850 lb. Always assess the individual patient. Use the search above with weight and lift model to see matching part numbers.
Are Hoyer slings compatible with all Hoyer lifts?
No. Compatibility depends on the sling style and the lift’s spreader bar or cradle.
Most Professional series lifts use loop-style slings with a 6-point spreader bar. Presence and Stature can also use clip-style Comfort slings when fitted with a 4-point cradle. Sit-to-stand lifts (Journey and Elevate) use stand-aid slings. Classic series lifts (HPL402, HML400) use Classic U-Sling and One Piece part numbers.
Always match the sling to the specific lift. Non-genuine or incompatible slings create a serious safety risk.
Can I wash Hoyer slings, and when should they be replaced?
Most reusable polyester, mesh, and padded Hoyer slings can be machine washed, typically up to 185°F / 85°C. Do not use bleach — it damages the material and makes the sling unsafe. Air dry or use a cool, low-temperature dryer.
Disposable slings are for single-patient use only. Do not wash or reuse them.
Inspect every sling before each use. Discard and replace any sling that is bleached, torn, frayed, cut, or has damaged stitching. Joerns recommends using only genuine Hoyer slings with Hoyer lifts.
